What Is 'Poor Things' About?

The woman who commits suicide by jumping at the beginning of the movie dies, and it turns out that she was murdered by the strange scientist Dr. Doc. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) is brought back to life after replacing a woman's brain with that of a fetus. Baxter's "creation" is Vera Baxter (Stone), who returns to the world with the brain of a child, both literally and figuratively. Bella is a mysterious being. While confined to her home in Baxter, she learns about the world around her. Her Baxter home also hosts other experiments such as ducks and goats and chicken dogs.

Dr. Baxter brings medical student Max McCandles (Ramy Youssef) home to record Bella's growth, and the two soon fall in love and become engaged. But soon, unscrupulous con artist Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo) arrives at the Baxter household and whisks Bella away on her trip around the world. As Bella continues her education, she learns about how the world works, who she is, and who she wants to be.
